The Dutch King pays state visit to China and meets iSQAPER partners

DutchKingvisit

During his state visit to China King Willem-Alexander visited the loess plateau. The king observed how the fight against centuries of erosion is going. This is happening through, among other things, the planting of trees, installation of terraces and changing the way farmers work. Several thousand square kilometers have already been taken under management and been changed from a nearly desert like landscape into a green and once again fertile area. Wageningen UR is part of this work

The delegation with King Willem Alexander attended the signing of an agreement of cooperation between Wageningen UR and the Chinese Institute for Soil and Water Conservation (ISWC). Both organisations collaborate in the iSQAPER project and are already active in different other project during the last 20 years.

Inspiring workshop about workpackages 2 and 3 of the iSQAPER project

Paul Maeder and Jens Wohlfart from the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FIBL) organized an inspiring workshop about the work to be carried out in workpackages 2 and 3. This workshop was held in Frick, Switzerland from 12-14 October. WP2 is dedicated to the collection and classification of soil, climate and land use data to characterise the edaphic aspects of typical crop and livestock farming systems across Europe and China. Work package 3 deals with the analysis of existing soil quality indicator systems and field experiments to fill knowledge gaps.

Interview with the Lemesle family about gender issues

iSQAPER Case story Lemesle family

grandparentsSummary:
In 1959 when the Lemesle couple bought their actual farm it was in bad condition, the roof leaked and the land was poor. It used to be a wood which was cut down and now merely showed the roots of the trees. They removed the roots and added organic matter to the soil to improve the structure. Grandma rebuilt the complete roof of the house. Together with grandpa she shared the farm responsibilities, equality and solidarity is their motto which was not normal in those days but appeared to be successful nowadays.
