Agriculture Higher School (ESAC) is one of six higher education institutions of the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra (IPC), focusing on agricultural and environmental education and research. ESAC hosts the Study Centre for Natural Resources, Environment and Society (CERNAS), the only Research Centre addressing the themes of Rural World, Agriculture, Forestry, Food Processing, Environment and Society in the Portuguese Centre Region.
ESAC has always played an important role since its foundation in 1887, supporting the society, especially farmers of the North and Centre of Portugal. Being an important centre of applied science and technology, it also has an important role in the scientific front, coordinating and participating in research projects, funded both by national and international entities. These projects focus on environment, agriculture, forestry and food, particularly on soil and water quality and management related topics, like ECODEEP, DESIRE, RECOVER, FORESTAKE, GUYAGROFOR, FRURB, URBHI, TRADWATER, HIDRIA, NanoDC, AGRITRAINING. The school is also known for its strong ties with Portuguese Speaking countries, namely Cape Verde, Brazil, Angola and Mozambique.
