	Hello 访客, Linking local soil conditions to recommendations for appropriate land management practices is an important function of the iSQAPER's main product - SQAPP the soil quality app. In our 14 study sites, many management practices are being trialed and evaluated to provide the empirical basis for those recommendations. In this newsletter we highlight practices from three study sites in China, Estonia and Poland and include notice of an award that rewards land use and soil management practices mitigating soil threats. The benefits of straw return, Gongzhuling China Returning straw to the field, rather than burning it, improves soil structure and increases soil organic matter and nutrients. Minimum tillage, Tartumaa, Estonia Minimum (or reduced) tillage is now widely practiced in Estonia. Within appropriate crop rotations it can maintain soil structure, improve water infiltration and reduce compaction, fuel and labour costs. How to improve and save soils in Poland Land and Soil Management Award 2018/19 The European Landowners Association has announced the call for its Land and Soil Management Award 2018/19. The €5,000 prize rewards land use and soil management practices mitigating soil threats i.e. soil degradation, erosion, reduction of organic matter content, diffuse contamination, and compaction as well as the reduction of soil biodiversity, salinization, sealing, flooding and landslides. In doing so, the award sheds light on outstanding achievements, encouraging new concepts of land and soil protection and their implementation in land management, as well as enhancing awareness about the importance of land and soil functions. Applications are welcome from farmers, landowners, land managers, groups of farmers, on their own or in collaboration with research institutes, universities and/or private companies.
